Extensions and Custom Apps for Airtable

Airtable's built-in extensions (formerly "apps", and before that "blocks") add charts, maps, page designers, batch updates, scripting, and dozens of other tools to a base. When the marketplace does not have what you need, Airtable's extensions SDK lets us build a custom extension that runs inside your base with full access to your tables. BaseBrainers configures, scripts, and builds all three.

Choosing the right extension, not the first one

The extensions marketplace is large, and several extensions overlap. We start by asking what the outcome is: a chart a manager checks every Monday, a batch update that runs before month-end, a document generated from a record. Then we pick the extension that does it with the least maintenance, configure it, and document how it is used. Often the right answer is a Scripting extension with twenty lines of JavaScript rather than a paid third-party tool.

Custom extensions with the SDK

When no marketplace extension fits, we build one. Custom extensions are React apps that run in Airtable's extension sidebar and use the @airtable/blocks SDK to read and write records, react to selection, and call external APIs. Typical builds: a side panel that pulls live data from your ERP when you select a customer, an address validator, a one-click quote generator, or a bespoke visualisation. We handle the SDK project setup, release to your base, and the upgrade path.

Interfaces and Omni-built apps

Since Interface Designer arrived, a lot of what used to require an extension is better built as an interface page: dashboards, record review screens, forms, and role-specific views. In 2026, Airtable's Omni can generate a first version of those interfaces from a prompt. We help you decide which layer a feature belongs in (extension, interface, automation, or script) and, for Omni-generated interfaces, we refine the result so it is usable by people who did not write the prompt. See our UI Design in Airtable service for the interface side.

Integrations from inside the base

Extensions are a good home for integrations that need a button and a person: "Send to accounting", "Sync this contact to the CRM", "Fetch shipping status". We build these with the SDK or the Scripting extension, calling your other systems through their APIs, with clear error messages when the other side is down. For unattended, event-driven integrations we use automations or the Web API instead; see Airtable API Integration.

Automations and workflow enhancements

Scripts inside automations and extensions let us do the things native automations cannot: loop over linked records, de-duplicate, compute across tables, or enforce business rules on save. We write those scripts to be readable by your team, with logging, and we keep them in version control outside the base.

Permission-aware design

Extensions and scripts run with the permissions of the user who triggers them, so we design them to respect your workspace and base roles rather than work around them. Where you need more granular access than Airtable's roles provide, the answer is usually an interface with the right audience and field visibility, not a plug-in that hides data. See Airtable Security and Compliance.

Custom reporting

Chart, Pivot Table, and Page Designer extensions cover most reporting needs when they are configured against the right views. For anything beyond that we build custom reporting extensions or push data to a dedicated BI tool. See Airtable Reporting and Analytics.

Custom extension UIs and enhanced forms

Consultants cannot invent new Airtable field types, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. What we can do is build custom extension UIs and enhanced forms that capture data the standard form view cannot: conditional sections, validated inputs, lookups against existing records, and multi-step entry, writing back to ordinary Airtable fields so your base stays portable.

Tailored solutions

No two bases are alike. Our approach is collaborative: we identify the pain points, scope the smallest extension or script that removes them, and hand over something your team can maintain.
